Disaster victims get NEMA succour in Abia




Thirteen communities in Abia State, which were victims of disasters between January and September 2015 have been given materials worth millions of naira by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The materials included domestic items, foods, beverages among others, were handed over to the representatives of the communities at the state NEMA office in Umuahia by the state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Eme Okoro, whose office also oversees NEMA.

The SSG who commended NEMA for the materials said that the state government has become proactive to prevent and reduce natural disaster occurrences in the state, especially those he tagged Man-made ones and sympathised with the affected communities even as he lauded the NEMA for performing its statutory duty in this regard.

NEMA Director General Mallam Sani Sidi, who was represented by the Owerri Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Innocent Ezeaku. named the disasters that hit the communities as flood, rain and wind storms, some of which he attributed their cause to poor town planning and drainage system hence he urged government to do the needful to avert them.
