Doctor tasks Nigerians on innovation as U.S. exits WHO

Dr. Ejike Oji, Chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Family Planning in Nigeria (AAFP), says there is no better time for the Nigerian health sector to be innovative than now.

Oji said this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abuja, while responding to the pulling out of America from the World Health Organization (WHO).

NAN reports that President Donald Trump, in one of his Executive Orders, withdrew America’s membership of the WHO.

Reacting to the development, Oji advised Nigerians to be innovative, self-sustaining, and reliant in terms of medical interventions.

According to him, “We should brace up for alternatives. By this, I mean we should be substantive with what we have.

“This is the time for our people to be innovative and self-sustaining in order to meet up with our financial demands rather than relying on international donors.

“We need to be self-sustaining now rather than depending on international donors, because many of these donors will withdraw their support as a result of America’s withdrawal.”

The medical practitioner, however, faulted America’s withdrawal from the WHO, saying the development would have serious negative effects on the world and Africa in particular.
