The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual violence Response Team (DSRVT) yesterday identified domestic violence as top of cases involving Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.
The Co-chair of DSRVT and the state’s Attorney General, Adeniji Kazeem, who disclosed this yesterday at a briefing on the activities of the team, said domestic violence recorded 89 of the total of 192 cases it handled in the period under review, while defilement had 62 cases.
The DSVRT, which provides coordinated response and creates unprecedented levels of collaboration among professionals working to end SGBV in the state, also recorded 18 rape cases, six attempted rape, 10 child neglect and seven child abuses.
The Attorney-General, who reiterated the government’s commitment to prosecute violators of child right despite their societal standing, said 92 of the cases are presently being heard in court.
According to him, government has commissioned a detailed research in all prison facilities in the state on sex convicts and inmates awaiting trial for SGBV cases in order to address lack of data depicting trends and possible reasons why people perpetrate sexual assaults.
Results of the research, he said disclosed that 80.9 percent of the inmates were abused as a child, implying that they had become sexually active at an early age, while 89 percent of the inmates are always under the influence of alcohol.
