A don in the University of Calabar, Prof. Enang Ibingha, has advocated for integration of the traditional institution into the state and national security, as well as governance framework to check the challenge of insecurity that has claimed thousands of lives in the country.
Ibingha made the advocacy in Calabar yesterday, at the 2023 symposium and thanksgiving organised by Ikot Ansa Qua Clan Council, in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, with the theme, ‘Sustainable Development and Traditional Institutions in the 21st Century: The Nexus.’
Speaking on the topic, ‘Traditional Institutions in the 21st Century: Drivers of Sustainable Development,’ Ibingha said this has become imperative given the incessant cases of kidnapping, abduction and other forms of criminality ravaging the country.
He said a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country would ensure stability in governance and drastically reduce criminality in the country.
He said: “Creating constitutional roles for traditional rulers, as custodians of culture and traditions of the people nationwide is the way Nigeria must go.”
