Urge accountability, value reorientation
ERSTWHILE High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade and one-time Minister of Petroleum, Chief Philip Asiodu, have urged Nigerians not to despair, saying the country still has what it takes to bounce back and take her rightful place in the comity of nations. They, therefore, urged the people to probe the sincerity of those they elect into public offices.

Speaking at the Council of Retired Federal Permanent Secretaries (CORFEPS) luncheon and 2016 lecture at the weekend in Lagos, the elder statesmen said although the country was in a serious crisis, if those who are supposed to do what they need to do, including the members of CORFEPS are faithful, there is hope that it (Nigeria) would regain her lost glory.

Kolade lamented that the country was in a sorry state because the supposed custodians of the society were practically doing nothing.
According to him, what is lacking in the nation’s leadership is the aspect of custodianship.

“On this basis, I charge members of CORFEPS and all other Nigerians who are really concerned about what is currently happening to take up the challenge to redeem the country,” he stressed.

He also stressed the need to redress the nation’s value system, noting that there was need for public office holders to imbibe the fact that “leadership is a service and that they must be committed to making the country great.”

Asiodu said the situation was so bad that it requires something urgent to be done.“Where are in a situation where merit, hardwork, honesty and commitment have been relegated. Our system of bringing people into prominent offices is really letting us down,” he remarked.
