‘Don’t discriminate against women’

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has warned against any form of discrimination against women in the state. He pledged his full support of women participation in governance as they are partners with great potentials that must be harnessed and developed.

The governor, at the 2017 edition of the Women in Government (WIG), said that “nations with increased women’s participation in politics tend to be more inclusive, responsive and democratic.

“The laudable improvement in women participation can be attributed to the sustained efforts aimed at re-awakening the awareness of female gender and the need to involve greater number of women as decision makers,” he said.

The conference, which was aimed at promoting women empowerment and rights advocacy for women was organised by Association of Corporate Governance Professionals of Nigeria (ACGPN).

Ambode also assured that government would continue to empower the women and provide an enabling environment for them to play active roles in politics and governance.

He added that strengthening women’s rights and addressing barriers to political participation were critical to achieving gender equality and female empowerment.

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Tunde Lemo, said that development in any country “is inevitable, if barriers against women attaining the zenith of their career are scoured.”

Speaking on the theme, ‘Breaking the glass ceiling: in the active role in politics and governance of our nation’, Lemo said “discrimination against women is fading out in progressive countries and competitive institutions globally.
