Don’t leave politics for people with ulterior motives, Osun chief of staff urges Nigerians

The Chief of Staff (CoS) to Osun State governor, Dr. Charles Diji Akinola, has asked Nigerians to join political parties to contribute their quota to the nation’s development.

Akinola gave the admonition during the investiture ceremony of Uche Obienu as the 37th President of the Rotary Club of Ikoyi and the inauguration of the board of directors of the club.

In his words: “As citizens, we need to all show more interest in politics. The only hope we seem to have about ever turning our nation around is if we have many more correct minds and hearts joining the political train. The current situation where the political space is left largely to those with ulterior motives would do no one any good.

“Those of us who are old enough will recall that politics during pre-independence and the First Republic was largely known for the infusion of the bright minds that characterised it. Consider Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa and their foot soldiers, for instance. They were men of big ideas who dared to do the impossible when they held sway.

“Governance, during their time, was driven by great ideas and unassailable moral capital.

“Put that side by side with what we have today, your guess is as good as mine. But then, we have an opportunity to turn the tide around now. If nothing drives us, we should, at least, remember that there is no other country to call our own. Posterity will not look on us kindly if, despite having all it takes to do it right, we refuse to take the bull by the horn.”
