Menace remains ‘pandemic’ in Lagos, says commissioner
Archbishop of Lagos Metropolitan See, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged parents to pay attention to their wards to save them from addiction to drugs and exposure to pornography that appears to be dangerously infiltrating the society.
Martins spoke through the President, Lagos Archdiocesan Catholic Men Organisation Nigeria (LACMON), Kingsley Ekwem, along with others ahead the 11th edition of LACMON 2024 Family Convention with the theme: “The family: The vocation and path to love of God,” with focus on ‘overcoming drug and pornography addictions in family life’ scheduled to hold on August 9 and 10, 2024 at St. Gregory College, Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The cleric tasked parents to medically test their children often to know if they have begun to indulge in drug abuse to enable them nib the destructive attitude in the bud.
RELATEDLY, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, has described drug abuse as a pandemic in the state, requiring urgent attention.
Ogunlende, while speaking during an empowerment programme, titled: “Empowering Her Fortune Initiative (EHF) 2.0”, yesterday, in Lagos, organised by Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area in conjunction with MTN Momo, a Fin-Tech Subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, urged youths in the state to shun drugs capable of truncating their future.
The commissioner, therefore, called on all relevant stakeholders and well-meaning individuals to join hands in the fight against drug abuse in various communities to secure the lives and future of the youths.
He said that the state government’s war against drug abuse informed the launch of the awareness campaign tagged “Lagos Kicks Against Drug Abuse.” He commended the Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Fuad Atanda-Lawal, for taking the empowerment of women seriously to boost their trade.
