• Says Ebubeagu should not be involved in electoral process

Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Aliyu, yesterday, warned all political parties in the state to stick to the rules of engagement to avoid the hammer of the law.

CP Aliyu made this known in Abakaliki during a joint security meeting with leadership of political parties and security chiefs, which held at the police headquarters.

He noted that every political party has the right to do its campaigns provided it is within the rules.

The CP noted that political parties are expected to inform the Command and other security agencies in the state about their campaign schedules /timetable whenever they are to embark on campaign/rallies for the purpose of security clearance and coverage.

He added that Ebubeagu operatives have no role to play in the forthcoming general elections in the state, and, as such, should not participate in election activities.

He disclosed that over 25 Ebubeagu operatives are currently serving at Abakaliki correctional centre for various offences.

He tasked the 13 council chairmen of the state to desist from engaging Ebubeagu operatives in activities of the forthcoming general elections in the state.

Aliyu also warned against recruitment of thugs by politicians to cause crisis during the election period in the state.

He stressed that such will not be tolerated just as he vowed to arrest and prosecute offenders who violate the electoral process.

According to him, “Ebubeagu has no role in election campaigns, and it is not created for political purposes; rather, they are to complement the security architecture of the state with state actors.

“Therefore, no council chairman or political party stakeholders should engage Ebubeagu operatives or bear arms of whatever calibre for whatsoever reason, as the South East security outfit is not created for their political aggrandisement, but to strengthen the security of the State as non-state actors.
