Economist urges FG to be strategic in addressing downturn

Buhari-ChangeApparently pained by the current economic downturn in the country, a top international economist and chartered accountant,Dr Olu Olasode, has called on Nigerian leaders to rethink strategies, realign priorities, block leakages, and stress-test institutional readiness for rebound and growth.

Speaking on Enhancing Governance and Rebuilding Culture, Olasode said in Abuja d that the “economic downturn provides opportunities for repositioning, strength and growth,” in the quest for policy deliveries.

According to him, the changing national economic landscape requires leadership that is proactive, understands the dynamics of change, and can formulate responsive actions to deliver sustainable improvements.

“The current administration is trying to propagate change, but change does not come without a strategy to empower the people. In times of depression and recession, leaders of both private and public sectors need to seek innovative ways to harness new opportunities. We believe we cannot change institutions without changing the behavior of the people,”

Answering questions on the best options available to the current Nigerian government to deliver on its promises to the people, the transformational leadership consultant said the President Mohammadu Buhari-led administration could do much through injection of stimulus through enterpreneurship and rural development, as well as directing its policy focus to areas it knows it can deliver.

According to him, there was need to build tomorrow from today, adding that “unfortunately, the focus is on the people who are there now,” even as he said that the way forward is for the government to mitigate the disappointment by engaging the people through answering the question on “what are the alternatives”.
