ECOWAS, Benin security forces to strengthen election security

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has organised a three-day strategic workshop for security agencies in Benin Republic aimed at strengthening election security management and promoting participatory democracy ahead of the country’s presidential election.

The workshop, organised by the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security in partnership with the Police Républicaine du Bénin and the ECOWAS Resident Representative Office in Benin, was held from March 9 to 11 at the Azalai Hotel.

According to the organisers, the initiative forms part of ECOWAS’ broader structural conflict prevention framework designed to enhance stability and democratic governance across the West African region.

The experience-sharing workshop served as a strategic platform for security personnel to exchange knowledge and best practices on electoral security management, particularly in addressing emerging risks during election periods.

It also sought to strengthen and complement the existing operational frameworks of the Beninese national security architecture, especially those of the Police Républicaine du Bénin.

With Benin preparing for what observers describe as a historic presidential election, the programme focused on improving coordination, preparedness and professionalism among security agencies responsible for maintaining peace before, during and after the polls.

ECOWAS said the initiative underscores its continued commitment to supporting member states in consolidating democratic institutions, preventing electoral-related conflicts and ensuring credible and peaceful elections across the region.
