Editors decry deteriorating education, rising hardship, insecurity

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged the federal government to step up measures to address rising hardship, insecurity, and the deteriorating state of education in the country, warning that reforms without safety nets are worsening poverty among Nigerians.

The position of the Guild was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its Standing Committee Meeting held in Owerri, Imo State, on Sunday, and signed by NGE President, Eze Anana, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh.

The NGE acknowledged ongoing federal reforms but stressed that their impact “is becoming unbearable for the poor,” and called for additional interventions to cushion citizens against inflation and economic hardship.

On security, the editors noted recent breakthroughs, including the arrest of leaders of militant groups such as Ansaru, an al-Qaida-linked organisation, but said long-term efforts were required to restore confidence.
“The Guild emphasised the need for enhanced intelligence gathering, community policing, and strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders. Sustained efforts are necessary to restore confidence in farmers to return to food production,” the communiqué read.

The editors also described the state of education as worrisome, urging governments at all levels to improve funding, rehabilitate infrastructure, and prioritise the welfare of teachers.
“Education is essential for economic growth and development, fostering innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship,” the Guild stated.

The NGE further expressed concern over growing hostilities against journalists and media houses by some security agencies and non-state actors.
“A weak media may fail to hold those in power accountable, limit access to information, and create a disconnect between the public and reality,” the communiqué warned, while urging authorities to partner with the media in protecting democracy.

The Guild also called for greater transparency and commitment from governments in addressing the needs of rural communities.

In Owerri, the editors commended Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for his support to media practitioners and encouraged him to continue engaging the press in advancing peace and unity.
