Edo govt launches campaign against drug abuse among youths
In its efforts to combat the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the Edo State government has embarked on a comprehensive sensitisation programme with the theme, “Catch Them Young.”
The initiative, which kicked off in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area (LGA), is set to be replicated in Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts later this month.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Social Development and Gender, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, disclosed this to newsmen during the sensitisation programme, stating that drug-related issues account for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation.
She added that the initiative aims to educate school children and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the ministry has initiated this critical program to combat substance abuse.
Barbara Osobajo was represented by Mr. Sylvester Okeguale, Director of the Rehabilitation Department.
“Our children are the future, but the future is now under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth,” Osobajo said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, lauded the state government’s efforts, stressing the critical need for community engagement.
He stressed that addressing drug abuse requires a multifaceted approach, involving parents, educational institutions, and community organisations.
The Local Council boss noted the crucial role parents play in preventing substance abuse, encouraging them to stay actively involved in their children’s lives to mitigate the influence of peer pressure.
Muhizu called for a united front to ensure that youth receive the necessary guidance and support.
