The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa has issued a fervent petition to international communities, pro-democracy organisations, and human rights watchdogs, raising the alarm over the potential manipulation of security forces ahead of the Edo State gubernatorial election, slated for September 21.
The petition, made available to newsmen on Sunday and signed by the Country Director of the Coalition, John Mayaki, warns against what it describes as a looming threat to Nigeria’s democratic integrity if the Nigeria Police Force fails to maintain neutrality.
Citing growing concerns of bias, the Coalition accuses the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which controls the federal government, of attempting to leverage its influence over the police to tilt the electoral scale in its favour.
The petition detailed fears that the police, which fall under federal jurisdiction, may be weaponized as a tool for voter suppression and political intimidation.
“The Nigeria Police Force must rise above partisanship and provide a level playing field for all candidates. Anything less would be a gross betrayal of democracy,” Mayaki said.
The statement further warns that any attempt by the police to meddle in the electoral process would not only damage the credibility of the election but also erode public trust in law enforcement and the institutions meant to protect Nigeria’s fledgling democracy.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Edo State, Mr. Nemi Iwo, has assured of adequate security and vowed to ensure neutrality in the forthcoming Edo election. He met with chairmen of political parties and their respective governorship candidates ahead of the September 21, 2024 election in the state.
The CP, who welcomed the politicians to the meeting, said the interface was geared towards ensuring a peaceful election.
Iwo reassured the gathering that the Police and sister security agencies will ensure that all stakeholders, including electoral materials, are protected. He appealed to stakeholders in the electoral process to urge their supporters to shun all forms of violence during the poll.
This was contained in a press statement issued on Saturday by the police spokesman in the State, SP. Moses Joel Yamu.
The statement noted that the police boss assured of adequate security to ensure that people can exercise their franchise without fear of harassment or any form of intimidation.
It also said the CP said that the command has commenced mopping up of illegal arms and ammunition while soliciting information to assist the Police in ensuring an enabling environment for the election.
