Some leaders of Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday opposed the Professor Tunde Adeniran-led committee to conduct the party governorship primaries, while also kicking against using the delegates list used for the recent election of the state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, for the primaries fixed for June 20.

They alleged that it would be unconstitutional to do so since the party’s constitution clarified that the party must conduct fresh congresses that would elect delegates who will vote for aspirants of their choice in any particular election.

The Guardian learnt yesterday that the decision of the PDP to use the same list of delegates, who elected Orbih as chairman of the party, was reached at a meeting held weekend at the residence of the former chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih.

But one of the leaders, who disagreed with the decision, Okharedia Ihimekpen told journalists yesterday “The decision to use Orbih’s delegates list is unconstitutional. It is criminal and it is unacceptable. And that whoever that will emerge from this primary will be unacceptable to the party and the public because it will be contested in court.

“We should go back to our constitution to go back to the rules. You don’t carry over a delegate that was used for chairmanship election for governorship primaries. What some PDP leaders want to do was to rig the primaries before the exercise. The PDP constitution is very explicit on this matter. Section 25 sub Section L stipulates that every delegate election is for a particular election and after that it cannot be used again.
