EDO State, secondary school teachers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) and primary schools under the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) yesterday lamented serious decline in interest by young people to become teachers.

State chairperson of ASUSS, Mrs. Osayuki Epelle-Asemota, lamented that research showed that less than one percent of young Nigerians are interested in becoming teachers.

She commended the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for choosing the theme for this year’s celebration.

She called on government to empower teachers through re-training and promotion as at when due.
