The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied a viral poster that claimed Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, better known as Sabinus, was wanted by the agency.
The anti-graft agency dismissed the poster on Thursday through a post on its official Instagram page, where it boldly stamped the image, “FAKE NEWS.”
Reacting to the circulation of the doctored material, the commission wrote, “Clout chaser, Stop this now!”
The fake poster, which spread across several social media platforms, carried the EFCC logo and falsely claimed that Sabinus, 43, was wanted for obtaining money by false pretence.
It also included a supposed last known address as 13/14 Ligali Ayomide Street, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
Checks showed that the poster closely copied the style and layout usually used by the commission when declaring suspects wanted.
However, the EFCC did not say whether it had traced the person or group behind the false poster.
Sabinus, who is widely known for his skits and comedy videos online, had yet to react to the development as of the time this report was filed.
The commission has repeatedly warned the public against spreading fake content and has urged people to confirm information from official sources before sharing it.
