Eid-el Kabir: FG suspends works on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

• Police, NSCDC, LASTMA deploy officers in Lagos, Ogun
Ahead of Eid-el Kabir celebration, the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has suspended construction activities on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to allow for easy movement along the route.

Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, in a statement, said work would resume on the road on Monday, July 3, 2023.

She said: “Due to the recent heavy traffic flow being experienced on the Lagos -Sagamu route, in the last couple of days, the inclement weather conditions, the forthcoming Eid-el Kabir and the advice of the traffic management team deployed to manage traffic related issues on the project, construction activities on this ever busy and very important highway will be suspended from Tuesday, June 27 to Sunday, July 2,2023.

“This is to allow travellers easy passage during the Eid holiday and minimise the discomfort during this very important period. Travellers are advised to cooperate with traffic management team deployed on the highway to manage traffic.”

ALSO, Lagos State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed over 1,800 officers and men to ensure adequate security and the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, during and after the celebration in the state.

The Commandant, Usman Alfadarai, said this would be achieved by emplacing intensive human and digital surveillance, intelligence and information gathering, persistent operational patrols, tactical deployments and effective interagency collaboration, among others.

Addressing the Operational and Tactical Teams of the Command, yesterday, Alfadarai said it was germane to deploy effective interagency collaboration mechanisms, with which all security agencies in the state can harness their useful human and material resources, if such need arises, to achieve the required measure of stability, peace and security, for residents, visitors and travellers, during such globally recognised festivity.

While congratulating Muslim faithful in the state, he warned officers and men deployed to be on the alert as they discharge their duties, without fear or favour of any kind.

He also further charged the officers and men deployed to remain professional, competent, respect the rights and privileges of the civil populace, in the course of their duties, before, during and after the celebration.

In Ogun State, the state Police Command assured that adequate security would be deployed at all prayer grounds to ensure polite and firm screening of ingress and egress of persons, vehicles, luggage, at various official lecture venues.

Spokesperson for the Command, Omolola Odutola, said flash points would be taken over by all security personnel, while an anti bomb ordnance unit has been deployed to ensure security of life and property in the state.

“The Department of Operations led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Bolanle Muritala, is the Coordinator of all security personnel deployed for this year’s Eid-el Kabir celebration.

“Ogun people, please go about your celebrations and do not panic in any form of imminent danger,” Odutola added.

ALSO, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has admonished residents to bag and containerise wastes generated appropriately, for a clean environment.

In a statement, the agency’s Executive Director, Finance, Kunle Adebiyi, assured the public that comprehensive measures had been put in place to ensure a clean and hygienic environment throughout the celebration, adding that Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators had been assigned to work tirelessly to clean up the city, maintaining a round-the-clock schedule.

He urged residents to shun all forms of indiscriminate waste dumping on road medians, canals, uncompleted buildings, and other unauthorized locations.

SIMILARLY, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has assured Lagosians that traffic personnel would be fully on the ground to professionally and adequately manage traffic before, during and after the festive period.

LASTMA General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, gave the assurance during a strategic meeting held with the comptrollers, commanders and zonal heads at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi.

Oreagba noted that the Eid-el Kabir celebrations is usually characterised by a high volume of human and vehicular movements, hence extra effort would be required to ensure a free flow of vehicle movements across Lagos metropolis.

To achieve a traffic-free Lagos, Oreagba said all motorists must maintain lane discipline, obey traffic rules and regulations as stated in the traffic law of Lagos State, maintaining that all acts of indiscipline and unruly behaviour by vehicle owners and road users would not be tolerated.
