Ejimakor cautions Kanu’s critics against defamatory remarks

Nnamdi Kanu

The Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, has said the agitator is serving a life imprisonment sentence for fighting for his people.

Ejimakor said Kanu is not in detention because he bought a house in Kenya or for infidelity, but because he chose to fight for his people. Posting on X, he cautioned critics to be wary of the kind of defamatory remarks they make against Kanu.

He threatened legal action against those making defamatory remarks against Kanu.

He wrote: “Some people need to be reminded that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is in prison for fighting for his people, not for allegedly buying a house in Kenya or for infidelity.

“So, before uttering your next defamation against him, think twice because muscular legal actions will ensue.”

In June 2021, the IPOB leader was arrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria. Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment following his terrorism conviction. He is currently serving his sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

MEANWHILE, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has condemned the way Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji was arrested at the weekend in Enugu by alleged security operatives.

Aghaji, an internationally acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon, renowned academic, distinguished statesman and one of Nigeria’s foremost medical icons, was reportedly taken from his residence in the early hours of Friday, July 3.

Sources stated that Aghaji’s arrest might not be unconnected with the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.  Professor is Kanu’s personal doctor.

Kanu’s lawyer, Ejimakor, had taken to his X handle at the weekend to alert about Aghaji’s arrest, alleging it was in connection with the medical report he issued on Kanu.

The Enugu branch of the NMA had convened the State Officers Council (SOC) at the weekend on receiving information about the development.

A communiqué from the meeting, signed by the State Chairman, Dr Sunday Okafor, and the Secretary, Dr Chima Edeoga, while decrying the manner of the arrest, recognised the constitutional responsibilities of security agencies but maintained that every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity and in accordance with due process.

The doctors stated that upon receiving reports from concerned medical elders and members of the association, the leadership of NMA in Enugu State commenced extensive engagements with relevant government and security authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

ALSO, a public policy analyst and legal practitioner, Christopher Chidera, yesterday, faulted the alleged arrest of Prof. Aghaji, describing it as an attack on the rule of law, professional independence, and the integrity of medical practice.

In a statement, Chidera alleged that Prof. Aghaji was arrested on July 3 after issuing an independent medical assessment of Kanu’s health.

Chidera said: “Prof. Aghaji’s reported medical assessments were said to have countered the official medical report presented by the DSS.”

He also claimed that the assessment contradicted the position of DSS, alleging that security operatives subsequently stormed the professor’s residence in Independence Layout, Enugu.
