Eko DisCo begins free meter distribution under federal metering programme

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) has commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), a national programme aimed at bridging Nigeria’s metering gap and ending estimated billing.

The exercise, which began on 6 November 2025, targets Band A and Band B customers within Eko DisCo’s coverage areas in Lagos and parts of Ogun State. It is funded through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) Tranche B, established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to support nationwide metering efforts.

In a statement, Babatunde Lasaki, General Manager, Corporate Communications and Strategy at Eko DisCo, said the rollout represents the company’s ongoing commitment to transparency and service improvement.

“At Eko DisCo, we remain committed to improving customer experience and service transparency,” he said. “This Tranche B rollout under the Presidential Metering Initiative ensures that more of our customers enjoy the benefits of accurate billing and greater control over their electricity consumption.”

Lasaki expressed appreciation to NERC and the Federal Government for sustaining the initiative, describing it as “a shared commitment to building a fair and accountable power distribution system.”

Under the arrangement, customers are required to apply through the Eko DisCo online portal. Those seeking new connections can register through the New Connection section, while existing customers migrating from postpaid to prepaid or replacing faulty meters are to log into their accounts or complete a new registration. Applications are open until 30 November 2025, with installation expected to continue until 31 December 2025, at no cost to applicants.

The Meter Acquisition Fund, introduced by NERC under Order No. NERC/2025/107, became operational on 6 October 2025. It approved ₦28 billion for distribution companies across the country to acquire and install prepaid meters for unmetered customers in Bands A and B.

The Presidential Metering Initiative seeks to address Nigeria’s metering deficit, estimated at over seven million customers. By providing free meters, the scheme aims to restore consumer confidence, promote fair billing, and strengthen accountability in the power sector.

Eko DisCo, through its subsidiary Excel Electricity Distribution Limited (Excel DisCo), continues to invest in infrastructure upgrades and customer service improvements. Its participation in the national metering initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance efficiency and reliability across the electricity distribution value chain.

Earlier in October, the EKEDC formally registered Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited as a wholly owned subsidiary to oversee its electricity distribution operations within Lagos State.

The move, according to the company, aligns with the regulatory framework established by the Lagos State Government.

The restructuring follows the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, which transferred regulatory authority for electricity markets from the federal to state level.
