The Nigerian Senate has disclosed that it would send a delegation to meet with embattled Nigerian lawmaker, Ike Ekweremadu, in London, the United Kingdom.

It would be recalled Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, was detained alongside his wife over organ harvesting allegations in the UK.

The Senate’s decision was after they met behind closed doors for two hours on Wednesday.

Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, commended defence lawyers to Senator Ekweremadu and his wife, who he said were working hard to get them out of detention.

He said he had a personal engagement with the Nigerian High Commissioner to Britain “who has done so well to establish contact with Mr Ekweremadu – who has been able to get his team to be in the court in Uxbridge where he was taken to.”

The High Commission, he explained, has been able to provide some consular services that included the engagement of lawyers who will defend the senator.

Lawan also said they “have limited opportunities to do beyond what has been done ” because “issue is already in court.”

He added that the Senate delegation would include members of its foreign affairs committee and will depart for the UK on Friday.
