A Civil Society Organisation, Citizens Action for Good Governance has called for the sack of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for his involvement in partisan politics.
The organisation said Emefiele’s expression of interest to vie for the presidency, while retaining his position as CBN governor had made both local and foreign investors to lose confidence in the nation’s banking industry.
In a statement, yesterday, signed by its National Coordinator, Nazir Galandanchi, the organisation said the apex bank’s governor did not deserve to retain his position even if he gave up his presidential ambition.
According to him, the sack of Emefiele would restore public confidence, as well as those of foreign investors in the country.
The group said: “If as the Governor of the CBN, Emefielehad formally resigned from his exalted office, nobody will question his intentions or otherwise, as it is his fundamental and constitutional right to seek to contest for any political position in the land.
“Unarguably, his political aspiration has distracted him and made him lose concentration over the wave of foreign exchange racketeering under his supervision and today, the naira currently exchanges for no fewer than N605.00 per dollar. The rate at which Nigeria’s national currency is crumbling at the expense of the US Dollars, Euro and other significant currencies, is not only alarming but also frightening.
“The lack of leadership direction due to the distractions of the governor and further lack of capacity to have firm control on the robust administration of the country’s fiscal instrument functionality amid competing global economic and market forces of trade, supply and demand of goods and services, has further worsened the basic economic conditions of daily existence of the average Nigerian, who barely manages to eke out a decent living.
“The over hyped Anchor Borrowers Programme for rice farmers further heightened corruption in Nigeria, as few political farmers were enriched at the detriment of genuine farmers.”
He noted that the conditions have jerked up prices of goods and services, within the urban and rural areas of the country, offering both the average, below-average and low-classed Nigerian citizens, the option of passing through the painful experience of witnessing rural poverty and urban misery, due to the dysfunctional administrative leadership capacity of the CBN governor.
“We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful and rescue what’s left of our country.”
The organisation noted that the continuous stay of Emefiele as the CBN governor would further compromise the nation’s economic security.
