THE Emir of Keffi in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Mohammadu Chindo Yamusa II, is dead.

The Galadima of Keffi, Alhaji Abdul Usman, confirmed this yesterday at a news conference in Keffi.

The Galadima, who is also the emir’s cousin, said that the late monarch, who took ill briefly, died in the early hours of yesterday in his palace in Keffi.

He said: “Our emir, the promoter of peace and culture, died this morning after a brief illness.

“His death is heartbreaking, painful, but God gives life and takes it at will.

“The emir had contributed a lot to the development of not only Keffi, but to the development of Nasarawa State and the entire country while alive.”

The late emir, who was 70 years old, was enthroned on May 11, 1978.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the final funeral rites and burial of the late emir was expected to take place yesterday after Juma’at prayer in Keffi in accordance with Islamic teaching.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday condoled with the government and people of Nasarawa State on the passing away of the Emir of Keffi and Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Dr. Muhammadu Chindo-Yamusa II.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the President extolled the virtues of the late monarch, who he described as a lover and promoter of peace and unity of the country.

“President Buhari joins them and the educational community in mourning the highly revered traditional ruler who will be greatly remembered as an advocate of peace and unity as a prerequisite for meaningful development in the country,” Adesina said.

The spokesman added, “The President believes that the late Emir will be greatly missed and remembered as one who generously contributed to national development through his fatherly counsel and advice to those in authority.

“President Buhari particularly recalls the late Emir’s appeal to Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s effort to counter insurgency and other social vices in the country as well as his advocacy for education as bedrock for development.

“The President prays that Almighty Allah will grant Alhaji Yamusa eternal rest and provide a successor who will do even more for the peace, development and prosperity of the people of Nasarawa State.”
