Enabulele alerts to overwork of young physicians
President of the World Medical Association (WMA), Dr. Osahon Enabulele, has warned about increasing bullying, harassment and overwork of junior doctors.
In his remarks at the weekend during the first International Junior Doctors Network Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Enabulele said the consequence was increasing physical and mental burnout of the medics.
His words: “The declining level of mentorship in the medical profession has left most junior doctors disillusioned, with some exiting the medical profession or seeking alternative career pathways, a situation that has impacted negatively on healthcare delivery and health outcomes.”
He called for greater support and empowerment of younger doctors, restating WMA’s commitment to their well-being and career development.
Enabulele canvassed revitalisation of mentorship platforms, improved welfare, career development, sustainable professional development and effective communication.
He, therefore, assured junior doctors around the world of the global body’s resolve to address violence against physicians in workplace.
