Engineering students urged to emulate late Makoju’s legacy

Engineering students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) have been admonished to emulate the legacies of former Managing Director of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) late Engr Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, by acquiring necessary knowledge and skills to impact their society.

Vice Chancellor of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Professor Abdulrahman Asipita, made the call at the 3rd Memorial Lecture he delivered in honour of the deceased industry Icon Engr Dr. Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, at the Federal University, Lokoja yesterday.

In the memorial lecture titled “Joseph Oyeyani Makoju: Archetype of Adaptive Energy Transition and Cement Manufacturing,” Asipita noted that the former CEO and Managing Director of PHCN has revolutionized the nation’s energy infrastructures through various innovations that facilitated the adaptation of renewable energy.

The guest lecturer said, “Investing in human capital development is crucial for sustaining national progress. We must actively nurture the next generation of engineers, developing local engineering capabilities as a crucial factor in driving sustainable development.

“Throughout his career, Engnr makoju exemplified professionalism, diligence, and ethical leadership. These qualities should guide our approach to governance, industry, and academia. His ability to navigate complex challenges and drive transformative change is a model for Engineering students and leaders in all sectors.

“Engr Makoju’s ability to foresee industry trends and adapt accordingly was a major factor in his success. He recognized the role of technology in enhancing efficiency and promoting sustainability. We must continue to foster innovation to drive economic growth.

“His commitment to responsible industrial growth is a guiding principle for our efforts to build a sustainable future. As climate change and environmental concerns take centre stage, we are responsible for implementing sustainable practices in all sectors, particularly in energy and manufacturing.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, said that the memorial lecture was instituted by the University as its modest way of honouring the immense contributions and impactful life of late Engr. Dr. Joseph Makoju.

“Let me state here with all sincerity that the only way we, as a University, could reciprocate the rare and generous gestures of the late Engr. Joseph Makoju is by instituting this annual memorial lecture,” he said.

This lecture is not just a tribute to his memory, but a platform to sustain the ideals and values he lived for—excellence, innovation, and nation building.”
