Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced his administration’s plan to put in place a palliative measure, “One Project Per Local Council Initiative” to create employment, reinvigorate the economy and increase cash flow within rural communities.
These projects are to be awarded to indigent contractors from the respective local councils, who, in turn, are to recruit the locals to work and enhance their productivity, as well as boost their purchasing powers.
The governor was speaking when he received the report of the Palliatives Committee, set up by his government to work out modalities to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on residents of the state.
While receiving the report during a brief ceremony at the Executive Council chambers, Government House, Uyo, Eno stated his willingness to surpass the recommendations of the committee for the wellbeing of the people.
The governor tasked council chairmen to liaise with the state Executive Council to identify areas of need to be favoured by the initiative, urging the councils to donate lands for the planned agricultural revolution by the state government.
“What we are thinking of doing, beyond this, is to formally launch a One Project/ Local Council Initiative across the 31 local councils of the state.
“In the next one month, we want to ensure that we have one project in each local council. We want to ensure that our young people get to work in the local councils.
