Activities were yesterday paralysed at the headquarters of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in Enugu s workers embarked on a peaceful demonstration over what they described as “anti-labour policies” allegedly being promoted by management.

They also claimed that since coming on board over two years ago, the management had rebuffed various attempts at egging it to draft out the condition of services and procedural agreement for the workforce.

The workers also accused the utility firm of exhorting consumers by refusing to distribute pre-paid meters to them.

They alleged that no investment had been made by the company to improve distribution in the South East.

In defiance to the heavy security presence mounted by the management, the placard-carrying workers, who converged as early as 9.00 a.m. blocked all entrances to the company, chanting solidarity songs.

They were joined by some aggrieved customers who visited the company yesterday.

The Assistant General Secretary, Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUE), Cyprian Ndubuisi Akor, who led the protest, told reporters that though it was a warning protest aimed at calling management’s attention to their plight, he, however, added they would not return to work until Friday.

“Since the management came on board, it has not recognised labour. We have written them severally for us to co-author conditions of service, they have remained adamant. We have written them for us to have what we call procedural agreement so that methods of disciplinary action will be spelt out so that the way and manner people are sacked could be determined, but they have also remained adamant,” he alleged.
