Enugu PDP candidates in suspense as court rules on disqualification suite today

The Federal High Court, Enugu, will, today, rule on the suit filed by the Enugu North Senatorial candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chika Idoko.

The plaintiff (Idoko) had, in suit No: FHC/EN/CS/217/2022, dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 36 other PDP candidates, in Enugu State, to the Enugu Federal High Court.

Idoko contended that while PDP submitted its register to INEC on May 6, 2022, it went ahead to conduct its primary elections without availing INEC the mandatory 21days notice, which is a breach of the Electoral Act 2022.

The ADC senatorial contender, therefore, noted that since PDP conducted its primary less than 21 days after its letter to INEC, the party flouted a fundamental requirement in the nomination process, and, therefore, prayed the court to nullify the party’s primary.

But, Spokesperson of the PDP Campaign Council in the state, Chief Nana Ogbodo, said that the party is not worried by the court action, following Idoko’s suit.

Ogbodo said the court would also be interested to know how the nomination process in PDP impinges on the candidacy of the plaintiff, stressing that PDP has grown beyond elementary mistakes.

However, expressing optimism that INEC would withdraw the recognition of the listed candidates, the plaintiff, in a statement, regretted that PDP leaders in the state have been running from pillar to post in a bid to altar the narrative.

He said: “Without prejudice to the on going matter before the court, it has come to our knowledge that desperate politicians are plotting to generate frivolous issues and documents to confuse the court, and thereby subvert justice.

“I, Idoko, the senatorial candidate of ADC for Enugu North Senatorial District, in fulfillment of my vow to do good, and salvage Enugu State, instituted an action to sack PDP candidates in the state from participating in the 2023 general elections for flouting the Electoral Act 2022.”

He noted that since he instituted the action, there have been threats and intimidations, stressing that he is optimistic that the truth will prevail at the end of the day.
