Enugu transition committee gears up as CAN welcomes Ugwuanyi
AMID the frenzy in Enugu State ahead of the May 29 handover, commissioners, permanent secretaries, heads of departments are working to ensure that their handover notes are ready and submitted in good time.
The State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also described the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as the will of God and “a prayer answered for the continued peace and development of the state.”
During a visit to congratulate and pray for Ugwuanyi and the deputy governor-elect, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, the Chairman of the state’s CAN, Bishop Christian C. Obiefuna, said that “Ugwuanyi is the gift from God, as a result of our ceaseless prayers for a God-fearing leader, who will have listening ear, cater for the common man and strive to bring meaningful development to the state in all strata of governance.”
The association commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) and security agencies for conducting a transparent and peaceful election in the state.
While thanking the Christian leaders — comprising Most Rev. Bishop C.V.C Onaga of Catholic Diocese of Enugu (represented by Rev. Fr. Donatus Onuigbo), Ven. Jonathan Agbo, leader of the delegation of the Anglican Communion, Bishop Obi Onubogu of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Enugu — Ugwuanyi assured of his “resolve to fulfill my campaign promises and serve the state with the fear of God for the overall interest of the people.”
Meanwhile, the transition committee, set up by the outgoing governor Sullivan Chime and headed by the outgoing deputy governor, Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye, is working to conclude its mandate before May 29.
Sources close to the committee noted that the secretary to the state government (SSG), Mr. Amechi Okolo, who is a member of the committee, is coordinating the task of collating various hand-over notes prepared by the various ministries and government departments.
Dousing concerns in some quarters surrounding the silence of the governor over the committee, a source said, “as at this moment, the process of preparing handover notes is in a speedy process and we see it as more important than making fanfare of inaugurating a transition committee. The SSG is coordinating the activities of the various relevant officials getting their hand-over notes ready and these documents coming from them would be the main guide of the transition committee.”
Another source close to the governor explained yesterday that “what is important is that much work is going on and much has been done and all geared towards a hitch-free transition from Chime administration to Ugwuanyi’s in-coming government.”
Other members of the transition committee include the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr. Victor Atuonwu, Commissioner for information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, the Chairman of the state PDP, Chief Ikeji Asogwa, the state party Woman Leader, among others.
The State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Dr. Okey Eze, confirmed other members of the transition committee as the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr. Victor Atuonwu, Commissioner for information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, as well as other members picked to enlarge the committee like the state chairman of PDP, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, state Woman leader of the party, among others.
