… says Nigeria’s democracy under threat

A retired army chief, Col. Chinyere Obi has criticised the alleged use of security personnel by politicians to intimidate, harass, brutalize and subvert the will of the people during the recently held 2023 general elections.

Obi, who recounted how she was brutalized by thugs allegedly sent by agents of the state government during the poll, described the situation as illegal, unfortunate, “and a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.”

Speaking to newsmen in Owerri yesterday, the ex-army boss stated that the recent elections, particularly the ones held in Imo State, were far from being democratic and a true reflection of the people’s choices.

According to her, “the level of violence experienced across the country especially in Imo State during the polls, was unprecedented, uncalled for and should be condemned by all Nigerians for the country to move forward.”

She said, “I am 74 years old. After witnessing the last elections, I weep for Nigeria. I weep because we are gradually losing our once-cherished country. It seems there is no hope again for a better Nigeria.

“This last election was a mirage, a sham and unbelievable. The level of irregularities, violence and use of thugs largely made up of security personnel, including army officials, police, DSS and Civil Defence Corps were obvious and shameful.

“I do not think that anybody will be proud to be called a Nigerian after witnessing what happened last Saturday and on the 25th of February in the name elections. It is quite unfortunate and I can tell that if justice is not restored, we are doomed.”

Asked if she would subscribe to the return to the Military regime given the current situation in the country, Obi said, “yes, If I have the opportunity I will reintroduce the military regime. They said we are in a democracy. No! We don’t have democracy in Nigeria. I am not satisfied with what is going on and I am not satisfied with the military and police involvement on election day.”
