Former Guardian Law Report Editor, Chris Okeke, Deputy Managing Partner of Olaniwun Ajayi LP, Wolemi Esan, and renowned human rights activist, Jerry Aondo, were among the 87 senior lawyers elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on Monday by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In a ceremony marking the start of the new legal year, the CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun, highlighted the profound significance of the SAN rank, stressing the responsibilities that each new appointee must uphold.

According to the CJN, out of the 127 applicants, 87 were conferred the title, a testament to the rigorous evaluations by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), which scrutinised qualifications and integrity before arriving at this milestone.

Justice Kekere-Ekun noted the high standards outlined in the 2022 Guidelines for Conferment, underscoring the importance of merit and the ongoing review of these criteria to maintain the profession’s integrity.

The CJN warned that the SAN title, though a privilege, could be revoked if misused, calling for exemplary conduct and a commitment to justice.

The Chief Justice also urged the legal community to mentor younger lawyers, stressing the need for adherence to professional decorum, particularly regarding courtroom attire.

The CJN stressed the role of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in fostering relationships between the bench and bar, commending recent technological advancements in lawyer registration and election processes.

As Nigeria faces numerous legal challenges, the new SANs are expected to play a pivotal role in guiding the profession towards higher ethical standards, ensuring a just and equitable legal system for all.

The ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also reaffirmed the collective commitment to upholding the dignity and reputation of the legal profession in Nigeria.
