Former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the African Union of Journalists (AUJ), Lanre Ogundipe, has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and veteran journalist, Olusegun Osoba, on the occasion of his 87th birthday, describing him as a towering figure whose life epitomises integrity, professional excellence and selfless service to Nigeria.

In a goodwill message titled, “A Colossus: Aremo Olusegun Osoba @87 – The Weight of a Life Well Lived,” Ogundipe said Osoba’s life has become an enduring reference point for generations of journalists, public servants and leaders.

According to him, while some birthdays merely mark the passage of time, Osoba’s 87th birthday provides an opportunity for society to reflect on the profound impact of a man whose contributions have shaped journalism, leadership and public service in Nigeria.

Ogundipe noted that Osoba belonged to the rare class of professionals who not only mastered their vocation but redefined it through discipline, courage and unwavering commitment to truth.

He recalled that Osoba began his journalism career at a time when the newsroom was built on rigorous editorial standards, where credibility was earned through painstaking verification of facts and uncompromising professionalism.

“His reputation was not built on sensational headlines or manufactured controversies. It rested upon a stubborn commitment to accuracy, courage and painstaking investigation. He understood early that journalism was not the business of exciting public emotions but the solemn responsibility of informing public judgment,” Ogundipe stated.

The former NUJ President added that Osoba’s successful transition from journalism to politics without compromising the values that defined his media career remains one of his most enduring achievements.

He said the former governor of Ogun State demonstrated that the principles of accountability, intellectual curiosity and respect for facts could also serve as the foundation of good governance.

Ogundipe also described humility as one of Osoba’s defining qualities, noting that despite occupying several high-profile offices, he remained accessible, simple and committed to mentoring younger professionals.

According to him, Osoba’s greatest legacy lies not only in the stories he reported or the public offices he occupied, but in his quiet investment in people and his ability to inspire future generations of journalists and leaders.

He noted that although technology has transformed the media landscape, the values that shaped Osoba’s career remain timeless.

“Truth still demands discipline. Facts still require verification. Credibility remains journalism’s most valuable currency. That is why Osoba’s generation still matters,” he said.

Ogundipe stressed that Osoba’s life continues to remind journalists that integrity is permanent, politicians that power is temporary, and young professionals that excellence is cultivated through discipline, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to principle.

Congratulating the elder statesman on his 87th birthday, Ogundipe prayed for continued good health and grace, expressing confidence that Osoba’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.
