The former first lady of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu, has criticised the current governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for planning to hold a purported lecture in honour of her late husband, Rotimi Akeredolu, calling it an “insidious propaganda” taken too far.

In a statement shared on her social media handle, Betty described the move as “propaganda” and accused the Ondo State government of attempting to exploit her late husband’s name for financial gain.

“This is not for Aketi because I and my family are not aware. Damn it!” she wrote. “You and your co-travellers cannot shave Aketi’s head in his absence.”

She further alleged that the initiative was a ploy to tarnish her husband’s legacy, dismissing the planned event as a charade and calling it a “#yahoo #419 lecture.”

Betty also accused certain officials of isolating her family while pretending to honour the former governor’s contributions. “Your minions are scared to get close; otherwise, they lose their appointments,” she said.

The former first lady shared a candlelight post with the caption, “Aketi’s memorial is not for a publicity stunt, beware!” before her latest outbursts about the Ondo State government.

Her late husband and former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, died on 27 December 2023 at the age of 67 in a German hospital, where he was receiving treatment for leukaemia and prostate cancer.

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who served as Akeredolu’s deputy, succeeded him before winning reelection to a full term with 366,781 votes, accounting for 72.06% of the total votes cast. His closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), received 117,845 votes, representing 23.15% of the votes.

No official response from the state government has been issued regarding the accusations.
