Cross River NUJ celebrate veterans

Mental health specialist, Dr Egbeh Otu, has drawn attention to the growing mental health challenges in society, linking them to worsening socio-economic conditions such as poor housing, unemployment, and financial difficulties.

He stated this yesterday during a health talk and mental health screening session organised for journalists at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.

The event, part of activities to mark the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week in Cross River State, brought together media professionals to highlight and address mental wellness concerns in the sector.

Dr. Otu emphasised that mental health issues are not only widespread but often go unrecognised due to the stigma and a lack of awareness.
He stressed the urgent need for increased education, dedicated research, and the development of a more resilient and responsive healthcare system to address these challenges effectively.

“Beyond medical intervention, we must address the root causes of psychological distress such as economic hardship and social instability,” he said, urging policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise mental health as a critical component of public health,” he said.

MEANWHILE, in a rare show of solidarity and appreciation, the NUJ, Cross River State Chapter, has paid tribute to some of its veteran members, recognising their years of dedicated service to the journalism profession both within the state and across Nigeria.

The union, led by its state Chairman, Archibong Bassey, embarked on a welfare outreach to the homes of retired journalists in Calabar, where tokens of appreciation were presented and heartfelt words exchanged.
