Expert tasks farmers on hygiene

Nigerian Farmers at all levels have been enjoined to maintain farming hygiene in their farms to avoid disease infections that might affect their productions, especially poultry business operators.

Speaking at the Nigeria Poultry and Livestock Expo (NIPOLI) held at Exhibition and Event Centre Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Senior Epidemiologist, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Lagos State office Dr. Hambolu Dupe, said hygiene would help farmers to protect bacterial infections in their farms.

“Controlling disease means maintaining a good security standards to ensure that diseases do not come into your farm. Again, make sure you do not borrow facilities from your colleagues and make sure you control the number of people coming into your farm. People, who do not have business with your farm should not be allowed to come into it,” he said.

According to Dupe, “when animal are not active, it means there is something wrong with it which might be diarrhea, coughing, viral diseases among others. Controlling the disease has to do with finding out what is the cause before treatments because there are different ways of treating each disease in animal.”

The co-organiser of the exhibition Sadik Shaikh from UTEX Exhibition and Marketing Services India said Nigerians would benefit a lot because there are more than 15 companies from India, who are into agro businesses that participated in exhibition. “We have more than 15 companies with technologies and innovations that can assist Nigerians to improve in their agricultural products.”

This is an opportunity for Nigerian farmers to start to expand their businesses and produce enough local products and export them to other countries rather than depend on importation.”
