Experts caution developers against sharp practices to check building collapse

Experts have warned developers and engineers against sharp practices to avoid further building collapse in the country.

President, Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE), Oreoluwa Fadayomi, said the antics of some of them were more pronounced now because of the high cost of building materials.

He noted that many developers are now in the habit of reducing raw materials to be in business rather than stopping the projects.

Also, President, Association of Consulting Architects of Nigeria, Mr. Kitoyi Ibare Akinsan, has called for concerted efforts to stem the trend, saying the situation could be worse because of the high cost of building materials.

He said professionals on buildings should meet to discus the issue to prevent building collapse.

Besides, General Manager of Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Mr. Remi Oni-Orisan, claimed that many buildings in the state were built in contravention of approved plans.

He stated this when he led a team of government officials to halt the development of 50 new sets of structures being built by Lekki Gardens in Lekki.

In another development, the Ondo State government has set up a seven-man committee to acquire some buildings and property affected by whirlwind around the Akure Township Stadium.

While inaugurating the panel at the weekend in Akure, the Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, said the action became imperative to sustain government’s utility and protect the residents.
