The Chief Executive Officer of SurfSpot Communications Ltd, Engr. Akohamen Emmanuel Agenmonmen, on Friday hosted The Tech Grid series, which brought together visionary minds in healthcare and technology to explore the theme: “The Rise of AI: Healthcare AI – Robo Doctors?”.

The event, held virtually, gathered distinguished speakers from around the world to discuss the ethical, clinical, and operational implications of Artificial Intelligence in modern medicine.

From automation in diagnostics to AI-driven pharmacy systems and mental health innovations, the session examined the transformative role of AI while emphasising the importance of responsible integration, especially within emerging healthcare systems in Africa.

Keynote Speakers and Insights: Dr. Ose Ikem, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist, Healthcare Innovator, AI in Medicine Advocate – El Paso, Texas, USA, opened the session by highlighting how AI can help close healthcare delivery gaps through real-time decision support, predictive analytics, and smarter drug management.

She emphasised that AI should not be feared, but understood and embraced as a powerful partner in improving care delivery.

Dr Ikem stated that artificial intelligence in medicine is not a threat, but a powerful tool for enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and impact of patient care and outcomes.

She encouraged healthcare professionals to upskill, collaborate with technologists, and champion digital transformation from the frontlines.

Dr. Ehima Ewere, Chief Resident in the Department of Anaesthesiology at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), provided real-world insights from the frontlines of surgical and critical care units in Nigeria. He highlighted AI’s potential to improve surgical safety, patient monitoring, and resource management, emphasising that artificial intelligence in medicine isn’t about taking control, but about giving us better control.

He stressed that AI should augment, not replace clinical judgment, helping doctors anticipate complications, make faster decisions, and ultimately deliver safer care.

Host Founder and CEO of SurfSpot Communications Ltd, ICT Expert, AI and Cybersecurity Advocate, and Harvard-trained Strategist Engr. Ako Agenmonmen reflected on Africa’s readiness for AI-driven healthcare, highlighting successful pilots in telemedicine, radiology, and electronic health systems. He emphasised the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration and ethical leadership.

He added that the true challenge of AI is not whether it can think like us, but whether we can guide it with wisdom, ethics, and responsibility.

He urged stakeholders to view AI not as a replacement but as a catalyst for expanding access, improving quality, and future-proofing healthcare systems across Nigeria and beyond.

He further stated that the Tech Grid 4.1 reaffirmed that while machines may assist in care, the heart of healing remains deeply human. The consensus was clear: AI is here, and it’s time for African innovators, regulators, and practitioners to lead, not lag, in this next chapter of medicine.
