A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists has killed three soldiers in Borno State .

The May 14, 2023 incident also wounded 10 other troops as they advanced towards an ISWAP camp in the Tunbum Reza area.

A counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed in Maiduguri, yesterday, that troops responded with superior firepower and successfully fought off ambush by the terrorists.

According to him, the device hit a Mine Resistant Ambush Vehicle (MRAP) belonging to Nigérien troops of Sector Four, Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), while another hit a Hilux truck.

A military source in Maiduguri said the terrorists suffered significant casualties, even though the exact number is yet to be confirmed.

Makama said: “This attack comes less than 24 hours after troops thwarted a similar one in Arege. It resulted in the killing of 10 terrorists and destruction of their three operational vehicles.

“They made an audacious attempt to infiltrate advancing troops using a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, but they were instantly neutralised.”

He noted that wounded personnel were evacuated for treatment at a military hospital in Maiduguri,

According to him, Operation Harbin Zuma was designed by MNJTF to clear terrorists’ hideouts and restore sanity in the Lake Chad region.
