Fake wines flood UK market

A leading fraud expert, Maureen Downey, has said markets in the United Kingdom are being flooded with counterfeit versions of popular wines.

According to Downey, who is also known as the “Sherlock Holmes of wine”, counterfeiters are replicating Yellow Tail, the second-largest brand in UK supermarkets.

In an interview with the Wine Blast podcast, Downey revealed that an Asian crime gang is behind the counterfeited bottles of wine, which she said are very hard to distinguish from the original products.

“An Asian organised crime gang has partnered with a European organised wine gang to flood the market with counterfeit Yellow Tail,” said Downey.

“The crime rings are spending half a million dollars to get the same digital printer used by the professional producers. They’re replicating bottles to an unprecedented level.”

Speaking further, she said the average consumer is bearing the brunt of the rise of counterfeited wines in UK markets.

“They are no longer making old and rare bottles because you need period glass, you have to age the labels and make sure the cork is ok.

“Now, they just have it all made to the same specs that the producers use. It’s a different game. It’s much more money. The average consumer is pretty screwed.”

In 2021, 41 counterfeit bottles of wine were seized in a supermarket in Birmingham after customers complained about taste inconsistencies.

Investigations revealed that these counterfeit wines were part of a large-scale operation, potentially linked to organised crime groups, with suspicions pointing towards origins in Asian countries.
