The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has flagged-off distribution of planting materials for dry season farming in the North East States of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, with plan to reach 700,000 people.

FAO Deputy Representative to Nigeria, Nourou Macki-tall, who disclosed this during the ceremony in Gujba Local Council Area of Yobe State, said for the 2017/2018 dry season farming, target was to reach displaced persons in formal and informal camps, and returnees and host communities in emergency and crisis phases.

He revealed that food insecurity in the region has reduced from 5.2 million affected persons between June and August to 2.6 million people between October and December 2017.

The development, according to him was due to improved security conditions that allowed return to farming and trade activities including the delivery of food aid and support to almost 3 million people and favourable climatic conditions for farming.

Marki-tall however warned that the food security and nutrition situation remained extremely fragile. He noted that without sustained humanitarian assistance in the region, an estimated 3.7 million people could face food insecurity next year.
