FCC chair reaffirms commitment to equity, fairness, justice

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Ayo Omidiran, has pledged a renewed commitment to equity, fairness and justice in the implementation of the Federal Character principle, describing the mandate of the Commission as critical to inclusive governance and national cohesion.

The Chairman made this known shortly after assuming office, noting that her leadership would focus on strengthening the institutional capacity of the Commission, promoting transparency and accountability, and restoring public confidence in the implementation of its constitutional responsibilities.

She explained that the Federal Character Commission, established under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Federal Character Commission (Establishment) Act, was created to ensure fairness in public service appointments and equity in the distribution of socio-economic amenities and infrastructural development across the Federation.

According to her, these responsibilities are fundamental to addressing historical imbalances and ensuring that Nigeria’s diversity is harnessed as a source of strength rather than division.

The Chairman stressed that the Commission’s policy direction aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in areas of institutional reform, good governance and national integration. She added that deliberate efforts would be made to deepen collaboration with ministries, departments and agencies to ensure compliance with the Federal Character principle and promote inclusive decision-making across all levels of government.

She further disclosed that a comprehensive five-year strategic plan would guide the operations of the Commission. The plan, she said, is designed to drive far-reaching institutional reforms, improve staff capacity and professionalism, accelerate digital transformation and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.

Sustained public engagement, she added, would also be prioritised to enhance awareness and understanding of the Commission’s role among citizens.

According to the Chairman, digital innovation will be deployed to improve data management, monitoring and compliance mechanisms, while staff development programmes will focus on equipping personnel with the skills required to effectively discharge the Commission’s mandate in a rapidly evolving governance environment.

Reiterating the broader purpose of the Commission, the Chairman emphasised that the FCC was not established merely to regulate public service appointments, but to uphold justice, promote inclusion and foster national unity. She noted that fairness in representation and equitable distribution of opportunities remain essential to building trust in public institutions and strengthening the fabric of the Nigerian state.

She assured Nigerians that the Commission would discharge its responsibilities with humility, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that equity is not only articulated in policy statements, but consistently practised in governance outcomes.
