The Federal Character Commission (FCC), in collaboration with the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), has called for a fairer distribution of infrastructure and socio-economic amenities across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas
The call is coming as the commission prepares to convene representatives of the 774 local government areas at a national workshop aimed at strengthening grassroots implementation of the federal character principle.
The workshop, themed: “Deepening National Unity Through Grassroots Implementation of the Federal Character Principle,” is scheduled to hold on August 24 and 25, 2026, at Tropic Galleria, Abuja.
The Oyo State Federal Commissioner of the FCC and Chairman of the workshop’s Planning Committee, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, said the gathering would provide an opportunity to deepen discussions on equitable development, grassroots governance and fair distribution of infrastructure across the country.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, Abass-Aleshinloye urged all the 774 Local Government Executive Chairmen to participate actively in the workshop, stressing that their involvement was crucial to achieving the objectives of the programme.
He said the success of the workshop should not be measured by the quality of discussions in Abuja alone, but by the extent to which its outcomes translated into tangible benefits for communities across the country.
According to him, local government chairmen are strategically positioned to identify the needs of their communities, implement development initiatives and ensure that socio-economic amenities and infrastructure reach the people equitably.
He said: “The real impact of governance is felt at the grassroots.”
The commissioner explained that the workshop would also enable local government leaders to share experiences, exchange ideas and develop practical strategies for improving grassroots governance, infrastructure delivery and equitable development.
He said strengthening the implementation of the federal character principle at the local level was essential to deepening national unity and ensuring that communities across the country benefited fairly from government development initiatives.
Abass-Aleshinloye lauded the leadership of the FCC under its Executive Chairman, Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, for championing initiatives aimed at promoting fairness, equity and inclusive development.
He urged the local government chairmen to seize the opportunity provided by the workshop to contribute meaningfully to deliberations and develop practical solutions that could improve the lives of residents in their respective areas.
The FCC, he added, remained committed to advancing its constitutional mandate of promoting fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the distribution of socio-economic opportunities and development across Nigeria.
