THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has launched Violent Crime Response Unit that will strengthen crime prevention.
The command also charged personnel to be proactive and professional in the discharge of their duties.
In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer,Josephine Adeh, the official launch in Abuja on was part of efforts aimed at strengthening the fight against violent crimes and enhancing public safety across the Federal Capital Territory.
“The event, which was presided over by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi had in attendance heads and representatives of sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, senior police officers, and other distinguished guests. Among those present were His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr Adamu Baba Yunusa, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman, FCT Council of Chiefs; the Commander, Guards Brigade, Brigadier General A.O. Onasanya; representatives of the Naval Base Abuja, 053 NAF Camp, Army Headquarters Garrison, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.
“Speaking during the launch, the CP stated that the establishment of the VCRU reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu towards proactively addressing threats posed by armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, organized criminal activities, and other serious crimes that threaten public peace and safety.
“He noted that the unit has been strategically structured into five operational sectors across the FCT to ensure broader coverage, improved intelligence gathering, faster response capability, and more effective deployment of resources.
“The Commissioner of Police emphasized that officers selected into the unit were carefully screened and rigorously trained, stressing that professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights must remain the guiding principles of their operations. He warned that misconduct, abuse of authority, harassment, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated under any circumstance.”
The statement continued, “he further called on residents of the FCT to continue supporting security agencies through timely information sharing, noting that sustainable security can only be achieved through partnership, collaboration, and collective responsibility.
