In a major feat in Nigeria’s anti-narcotics fight, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commissioned its first-ever barracks in Yola, Adamawa State. The state-of-the-art facility is to provide secure accommodation for officers and enhance operational efficiency in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking at the commissioning, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, hailed the project as a critical step in boosting national security and strengthening law enforcement institutions.
He said: “As you commission the barracks of the NDLEA here in the ancient city of Yola, it marks a significant milestone not only for the NDLEA but also for our overarching mission to safeguard society from the devastating scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.”
He stated that the move aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to rebuild national institutions, particularly security agencies.
“Despite the challenges posed by limited resources, the Federal Government has remained resolute in its mission to execute projects like this for the benefit of our dear nation,” Fagbemi added.
NDLEA Chairman and CEO, Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), appreciated the government, describing the barracks as an overdue necessity for the welfare of officers.
“For 35 years, our officers have operated without dedicated accommodation, exposing them to serious risks. Tragically, some have been trailed to their homes and killed. This barracks is a response to such threats, ensuring that our personnel and their families live in a secure environment,” added.
Marwa explained: “The Yola barracks include modern administrative buildings for both the Adamawa State and Zonal Commands, covering Gombe, Adamawa, and Taraba states. It also features a detention facility, a state-of-the-art exhibit room, a staff clinic, and operational facilities.” Chairman of the Senate Committee on Narcotics, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, commended the NDLEA for its commitment to the welfare of its officers.
