FETHI staff hail CMD Ajayi for improved service, patient satisfaction

Workers at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI) have commended the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Adekunle Ajayi, for the transformation recorded at the facility in the past eight years, saying improved staff morale, modern equipment, and infrastructure have enhanced service delivery and patient satisfaction.

Ajayi, a Professor of Medicine, is set to bow out later this year after completing his second term as CMD.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Olagoke Erinomo, said the hospital had been repositioned under Ajayi with remarkable achievements in its three mandates — clinical services, training, and research.

“Prior to 2018, this hospital was doing poorly. Patients had lost confidence in us and satisfaction was low due to human resource challenges, poor motivation, and lack of equipment. Prof. Ajayi came with a clear agenda to reposition the hospital as a choice facility, not only in Ekiti but nationally,” Erinomo said.

He listed the CMD’s interventions to include massive infrastructural development, staff recruitment, training, and investment in medical equipment, which improved outcomes, reduced waiting time, cleared surgical backlogs, and strengthened diagnostic services.

Consultant Chemical Pathologist and SERVICOM Nodal Officer, Dr. Ahmed Jimoh, said Ajayi introduced complaint-handling mechanisms that improved patient experience.

“Many laboratories now have automated equipment that reduced turnaround time, while theatres and wards have been upgraded with modern tools and consumables,” he noted.

Director of Works and Services, Engr. Dada Adedayo, praised Ajayi’s “knack for excellence,” citing the resolution of power and water supply challenges.

He said the CMD spearheaded construction of key facilities including a new Accident and Emergency Unit, Physiotherapy Building, Molecular Laboratory, Isolation Ward, Intensive Care Unit, Health Information and ICT Building, and an Assisted Reproductive Technology Laboratory.

The Chairman, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), FETHI chapter, Dr. Omotola Obajulowo, said Ajayi ensured ease of practice through provision of world-class equipment.

“When he came, there was no functioning dialysis machine. Within a short time, the old machine was revived and three new ones were acquired. His accessibility and open-door policy helped address concerns quickly,” he said.

Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, FETHI, Oladeji Oje, lauded Ajayi for prioritising staff welfare and industrial harmony. He said the CMD cleared inherited arrears, supported staff upgrading, and collaborated with training institutions to improve qualifications.

Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Olatunde Ojo, added that Ajayi’s tenure improved career progression for nurses.

“Promotion is motivation. Under his leadership, nurses advanced from chief nursing officer to directorate levels, a remarkable leap for the profession,” she said.
