FG appoints Idia Ize-Iyamu as UBTH CMD

The Federal Government has appointed Prof. (Mrs) Idia Ize-Iyamu as the substantive Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Her appointment, announced in Abuja on Friday, takes effect after the tenure of the current CMD, Prof. Darlington Ewaen Obaseki, ends on August 17, 2025.

A professor of orthodontics and current Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ize-Iyamu becomes the first female CMD of the tertiary health institution.

She began her early education at Corona Nursery School, Apapa (1971–1973) and Corona Primary School, Apapa, Lagos (1974–1978), before proceeding to Holy Child College, Obalende (1979–1985) and Queen’s College, Yaba (1985–1986).

She obtained her medical degree from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (1986–1992) and later qualified as a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (1997–2004).

In 2016, she attended Oxford University, United Kingdom, on a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship.

Ize-Iyamu began her medical career at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 1992–1993 before joining UBTH, where she rose through the ranks.

She is married to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and they have children.
