The Federal Government has approved the employment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to address the medical needs of inmates in correctional centres nationwide.
This decision was announced by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on February 13, 2025.
In addition, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be authorised to assign medical doctors to correctional centres during their service year, aiming to uphold the rights of vulnerable individuals.
Tunji-Ojo also indicated that existing medical personnel in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) will have their service extended beyond retirement age to fill current gaps in medical staffing.
He highlighted the shortage of medical professionals in states like Rivers before he was appointed Minister, underscoring the urgency for this recruitment initiative.
The Minister stated that the recruitment will also contribute to alleviating unemployment, with plans for it to be a continuous effort.
Furthermore, he announced the successful renovation of the Kuje Correctional Centre, transforming it into a modern facility. Improvements include upgrades to the cells, water supply, and hospital.
Tunji-Ojo emphasised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to addressing both short-term and long-term challenges within the correctional system, stating, “He is providing short-term solutions to short-term problems and long-term solutions to long-term problems.”
Additionally, the Minister revealed presidential approval for establishing a National Paramilitary Academy to train young citizens in paramilitary engagement and contribute to national security.
He also noted that the visa application process will now be conducted online, with approvals or rejections to be processed within 48 to 72 hours.
In terms of security, the Minister mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance the Private Guard sector’s effectiveness, including the deployment of a guard management system to automate related processes.
He expressed gratitude for the president’s support in fulfilling the ministry’s mandates.
