FG cautions Nigerians in Iran, Gulf states as Middle East tensions escalate

Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar

THE Federal Government has urged Nigerians living in Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries to take extra safety precautions following rising military tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said it is closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the region.

The ministry explained that the advisory became necessary after reported military actions by Israel and the United States against targets in the Iran, as well as retaliatory strikes by Iran on locations in some Gulf states, a development that has heightened tensions and raised fears of further escalation across the region.

“Given the heightened state of tension and the potential for further escalations, the Ministry is issuing the following advisory to all Nigerian citizens residing in or currently visiting Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries”, the statement said.

The government advised Nigerians in the affected countries to remain alert at all times.

“All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times. Avoid areas known to be strategic, military or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints”, the ministry stated.

It also urged citizens to limit non-essential movement until the situation becomes clearer and more stable. Nigerians were advised to avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations, which could pose security risks.

The statement further directed citizens to comply strictly with security and safety instructions issued by local authorities.

“Remember that cooperation with local law enforcement is paramount for safety,” it noted.”

To ensure support for Nigerians abroad, the government said its embassies are on alert, adding that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, as well as missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have been directed to provide consular assistance and maintain open lines of communication with Nigerians who may require help.

The Federal government also encouraged citizens to rely on credible news sources and official communication channels for updates, warning against the spread of misinformation during periods of crisis.

It also called on all parties involved in the conflict to show restraint and return to dialogue for the interests of global peace and coexistence.

“The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government”, the statement emphasized.
The Ministry also said it will continue to monitor developments closely and provide further updates as the situation unfolds.
