FG inaugurates bargaining committee, begins talks with health unions

The Federal Government has inaugurated the committee on collective bargaining for the health sector.

The inauguration, which took place on Friday, marks the beginning of negotiations with major health sector unions, as per the collective bargaining agreement guidelines.

The cheering news comes days after the NMA issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the government.

Barring any last-minute hitches, negotiation will take place with the Nigerian Medical Association, the Joint Health Sector Union, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and other health unions.

Negotiations will focus on remuneration, working conditions, professional development, and the welfare of unions, as the government called on all parties to negotiate in good faith and with a spirit of compromise to enhance the health and well-being of Nigerians.

The committee, chaired by Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, aims to build a fair framework for the health sector’s workforce, as stated by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate.

“The convocation of this committee is a milestone towards building a fair and sustainable framework for our health workforce. Health workers are central to our mission of delivering quality healthcare, and we must ensure that their needs are addressed with sincerity, transparency, and mutual respect, ” Pate said.

Representatives from various government offices, including the Federal Ministry of Finance and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, attended the inauguration.

NANNM has suspended its warning strike while awaiting the government’s fulfilment of demands, while JOHESU is threatening to strike.
