Firm, FRSC launch new road safety feature to enhance safety

Glovo

A leading multi-category technology company, Glovo, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has officially launched a new safety feature on the riders’ app and organised a road safety training in Lagos State, marking a major step in strengthening riders’ protection and road safety standards across Nigeria.

The new initiative is designed to address key challenges in Nigeria’s fast-growing e-commerce and mobility ecosystem by implementing data-driven preventive measures to enhance road safety.

According to the Interim General Manager, Glovo Nigeria, Reni Onafeko, the launch reflects the company’s long-term investment in safety, innovation, and responsible business growth in Nigeria.

Onafeko also said that the feature combines advanced technology with structured training to ensure safer roads for riders and the broader public.

She, however, highlighted the feature’s voluntary opt-in nature, saying that riders can use it to improve their safety.

In his remark, Senior Special Assistant to Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Education and Innovation, Oluwatobi Idowu, noted that the training was a good initiative by Glovo Nigeria, urging riders to take advantage of the unique opportunity to familiarise themselves with the necessary safety rules.

Also speaking at the event, the Assistant Corps Commander, Lagos Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Philip Ogah, who represented the Lagos State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, commended Glovo Nigeria for facilitating a refresher course for riders.

Ogah noted that the training was necessary to help riders be really conscious about their safety, stating that it was better for them to be equipped with safety tools.

Similarly, the Head of Operations at Glovo Nigeria, Oluwaseun Okugboye-Bello, said that the introduction of the safety feature on the Glovo app had become an essential new addition for riders’ self-improvement while collaborating with the platform.

According to Okugboye-Bello, the safety feature was incorporated into the Glovo app to protect riders, commuters, and pedestrians.

Meanwhile, the FRSC has begun enforcement and public enlightenment campaigns to curb lawlessness among commercial drivers who stop indiscriminately to pick up passengers, thereby endangering the lives of pedestrians and other road users.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen, yesterday, in Abuja.

Ogungbemide described arbitrary stopping by commercial drivers, particularly during weekends, as a routine traffic offence.

According to him, the offence occurs daily and offenders are regularly apprehended through ongoing patrol operations across the country.

The Corps noted that the call became necessary as part of its ongoing efforts to protect lives, prevent crime, and ensure road safety nationwide.
